Moriarty tips Ravens' cap
By Stan Goldberg
Sports Editor
As the man most responsible for negotiating players contracts for the Baltimore Ravens, this is a busy time of the season for Pat Moriarty.
Earlier this week the Ravens director of football administration was in Florida talking with the agent for defensive back Chris McAlister, the Ravens' franchise player who the team hopes to sign to a long-term contract.
He did not get back to Baltimore until Tuesday night.
On Wednesday he was in Frederick, not to sign any players, but as the guest speaker at the Frederick County High School Football 110 percent Scholarship Banquet at the Ceresville Mansion.
The event is sponsored by the Ravens Nest #3 and this year the group gave out $6,000 in scholarships to five county football players.
In his remarks to the group, Moriarty mainly talked about teamwork and stressed that the NFL is stronger today than Major League Baseball and the NBA because the football owners acted in unity, especially when they first negotiated a television contract 45 years ago.
But in an interview prior to the banquet, he talked about what is going on with the Ravens now.
Things are a lot different for him this season because, unlike last year, the Ravens actually have some cap money to spend.
"I sleep a little bit better this year," he said. "But the cap is overstated. It is just part of the offseason makeup. To be successful you have to do things the old fashion way. You have to draft well and augment that with free agents."
The Ravens have signed two free agents, defensive back Corey Fuller and special teams player Harold Morrow. They also re-signed offensive lineman Edwin Mulitalo.
"I think the offseason has gone well for us," he said. "We were able to re-sign Edwin Mulitalo, who is a pivotal member of our offensive line. We obtained Corey Fuller and feel real good about that. In Harold Morrow, we got a highly regarded special teams player."
But the Ravens also lost the free agent they wanted the most, wide receiver David Boston, who signed with San Diego. On Wednesday Jeff Blake, the Ravens starting quarterback most of last season, signed with Arizona.
"It is not too disappointing," he said when asked about Boston. "But sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't take. A few years ago we tried unsuccessfully to sign a defensive end. We made an effort, but he went in a different direction. Then two weeks later we signed Michael McCrary."
Asked about the Ravens chances of signing McAlister to a long term contract, Moriarty said, "I am the worst predictor. But we always feel adamant about putting out a proposal that is fair, something to reward the player, but one that makes sense to us."
He said he has been in preliminary contact with Kordell Stewart, the quarterback who was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers at the end of the season.
He said that Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome is very "methodical" in dealing with free agents.
"He likes to include all his directors, get all the input that he can," Moriarty said.
James Fraley of Linganore was the biggest winner Wednesday, getting a $2,000 scholarship. John Bellucci of Brunswick, Ryan Cutsail of Middletown, Jamar Garner of Thomas Johnson and Matthew Reynolds of Urbana each got $1,000 scholarships.
This is the third year for the banquet. The first year, the Ravens' Nest gave out $2,250 to two players. Last year, they gave out $4,000 to three and this year $6,000 to five.
Club president Mark Simpson said the goal is to give a scholarship to a player from every school in the county.
